Brant Goose spotted at Sweet Arrow Lake

Checked the Sweet Arrow photo page and noticed no postings for awhile; decided to send you a few of the Brant Goose I took a week or so ago. They are pretty rare visitors to our area. Looks like this one decided to make a stop at the lake and fuel up before continuing.

Red-tailed Hawk takes on a rattlesnake and wins.

Tom Jobe spotted this Red-Tailed Hawk dispatching a rattlesnake and is sharing his photos with us.  It was not at Sweet Arrow Lake but near Tower City.  Great photos of an unusual event.

Tom Jobe finds a Barnacle Goose

Stopped at the lake this morning to see the large flock of geese at
the boat launch and found this guy among them.  From photos I took, I ID'd
it as a Barnacle Goose, a rare sighting in PA -- wanted to share it with
you.  Tom Jobe

Very rare indeed-  Great job Tom!

Ron does it again...and again

Caught a nice Carp....29 inches long and weighed in at 10 pounds!!!

Ron does it again....

According to Paula, Ron's wife, Ron caught this beauty this morning using a hot dog that had been soaking in honey, vanilla and other liquids. Corky gave him the bait yesterday. Corky is still out from his ankle surgery and believe me, he is vey anxious to get back there. Maybe this will do it! Now Ron has some hot dogs in honey, vanilla and I don't know what else!!

It was 29 1/2 inches long between 10 and 15 pounds. (not one of those guys down there has a scale!) It was quite a haul though reeling this beauty in.

Cormorants By John K.

I got these cormorants this past Monday (5/22/17) out in front of Townleys’ lakefront. Full-grown ones are black, although it looks like the other two are larger than the black one. I think they were scoping out something for lunch! A big carp was breaking water nearby, but he was way out of their league! Maybe if they would have ganged up on him.

Trumpeter Swans

These are tagged Trumpeter Swans that showed up several days ago. They were hangin’ out with the other swans and the geese and ducks yesterday when I grabbed this photo. So much for the myth that swans will drive other waterfowl out of the area! I read that they are the largest native waterfowl in North America, with wingspans as much as 7 1/2 ft. and heights as much as 4 ft.! Some weigh in at over 30 lbs.! The name comes from their trumpet-like call.

John Keesey

At least 6 tagged Trumpeter swans first appeared on Sweet Arrow Lake last spring on what seems to be a migration North.  It is believed that they either escaped or were released from a  preserve or private breeder.  Genuine wild Trumpeter Swans are not ordinarily seen in this area.

Belted Kingfisher by Tom Jobe

Hi Bob,  Saw this Belted Kingfisher many times at the lake. She never sat long enough for a photo. Finally got some decent shots. It must have been my Christmas present. Tom

Note to Fishermen-  See all the fishing line wrapped around the branch?
Every year thousands of birds die when they become entangled in the line.  Please try to pick up all waste line and dispose of it properly.

Rare Bird sighting by Tom Jobe

Hi Bob, took these photos of a Ross's Goose this morning at the lake.  He was alone with a flock of Canada Geese.  According to what I read on a birding site, its presence is a record for Schuylkill County.

A tiny white goose with black wingtips, the Ross's Goose is like a miniature version of the more abundant Snow Goose. It breeds in the central Arctic and winters primarily in central California, but it is becoming more frequent farther east.
